MUSIC STUDENT PROFILE

Catheryn Kennedy
Bachelor of Music in Contemporary Music
Violin Performance

Senior

In 1984, I was born into an artistic family, my father a maritime artist, and though my mother was not an "artist" herself, she was a descendant of many musicians, and therefore a huge supporter of the arts. When I expressed the want to paint, I was readily given a painting smock, some paints, and urged on to create.

At the age of four, I found my mother's violin for which she had traded in her sitar back in Europe. I asked, "What is this?" to which she responded, "you will know soon enough." A half a year later, I began violin.

By five and a half, I was "performing" at my father's art exhibitions, on stages when my father was setting up, and earning pennies from the local hair dresser to by twenty-five dollar Australian crystal earrings.

By six, I knew I wanted to be just like my teacher. I remember saying one day, "I want to be just like you someday," which would have meant that I wanted to perform and teach. Though I went through stages of wanting to be a veterinarian, paleontologist, archeologist, and singer, I never grew out of knowing that I would be a musician.

At ten, I began trying out my skills with teaching-- which meant that my best friend was my poor guinea pig.

Today, I am in my fifth year at Western Oregon University studying for my Bachelors in Music Performance, and a second major in social Psychology. After I graduate, I will go on to graduate school to achieve my Masters in teaching or performance. My goals include touring, performing, and teaching.

I currently teach both in Monmouth and Keizer Oregon, to about twenty students in violin and viola. Between 2003-2006 I was hired at Neskowin Valley private school.

I have done much solo and group performances in the Willamette Valley area, up and down the Oregon Coast, and in and around my hometown of Waldport - including the Chamber Of Commerce, large convention parties, churches, weddings, talent shows, for the elderly homes, and many more.

I currently play in Western Oregon's Symphony Orchestra, a successful string trio which regularly plays for various events around the Willamette Valley area, an early music ensemble, and various student composition ensembles, and jazz ensembles. I am currently the concert mistress of the Western Oregon Symphony.
