SYLLABUS
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Attend 10 lessons per term:
- Students enrolled for 2 credit hours meet for a half-hour lesson and are required to practice assigned lesson materials a minimum of 9 hours per week; or
- Students enrolled for 4 credit hours meet for an hour lesson and are required to practice assigned lesson materials a minimum of 18 hours per week.
Attend 5 horn seminars: 1 hour each.
Missed lessons can not be made up. Failure to attend will lead to a grade of "Incomplete" or "F" for the MuP credits and/or MUS 250 credits. Missed seminars can be made up with express permission from Dr. Walczyk.
Students must be warmed up PRIOR to lessons and seminars.
Participate in an appropriate WOU ensemble each term that you are enrolled as a full-time student.
Enroll in MUS 250 (concert attendance) and attend 10 concerts (5 concerts for non-majors) over the course of the term. Off-campus concerts must be approved by Dr. Walczyk BEFORE concert date for credit to be granted. A concert attendance form must be completed with programs attached. Concert attendance forms are available in the music office.
Present a jury during the set times during pre-finals week. An appropriate jury form must be prepared, duplicated, and presented at your jury. Jury forms are available from Dr. Walczyk.
GRADES
Each lesson will be graded on progress made on the assigned materials, which may include the following:
- Technique: Warm ups/downs, scales, tonguing, tuning, flexibility, etc.
- Repertoire: Solo and excerpts
- Etudes
- Transposition
- Memorization
Other areas of evaluation include:
- Attendance
- Preparation (practice log)
- Progress - mastery of literature & techniques covered
- Accuracy and musicianship
- Memorization
To earn an A in performance studies, the student should attend all lessons, exhibit outstanding progress or growth during the term, consistently practice and prepare for each lesson, perform in lessons and juries with accuracy and good musicianship, master a core of appropriate literature during the term, demonstrate performing skills in workshops, seminars, recitals and/or juries, and attend 10 concerts and 5 seminars.
