Visual Communication Design

Video & Animation

Students of Video & Animation (Time-Based Media) at Western Oregon University:

  • Apply art and design concepts to creative and practical projects using powerful technologies
  • Gain valuable skills for designing and organizing video and animation projects from start to finish
  • Prepare for a wide range of careers (video communications play an important role in business, entertainment, art, government, and many other fields)
  • Learn strategies for self-directed skill-building to keep gaining new abilities after graduation and for the rest of their lives
  • Communicate with clients to address the unique context and audience of each applied project
  • Produce expressive artworks using cinematography, motion graphics, illustration, and sound
  • Think critically about animation, film, television, and online video

Students in upper level Video & Animation courses create projects using a variety of technologies, with emphasis on composition, timing, conceptual development, design process, and experimentation. In addition to gaining experience with cameras and software, students thoughtfully engage key issues of storytelling, appropriation, and prevailing cultural mythologies. Topics include camera technique, storyboarding, scripting, editing, 2D character animation, sound, visual effects, animated typography, digital 3D modeling, experimental film, and more.


VCD majors and minors can enroll in Video & Animation courses without having taken the Graphic Design series. Art majors or minors may choose Video & Animation as a concentration area. Course numbers: A326, A327, A328.
