and begin to take on the responsibilities of a designer.

In the middle of the graphic design experience at WOU
students practice skills ranging from
developing work habits & focus
to visual awareness & analysis of meaning and content.
During this time – the first upper division sequence of graphic design courses ¬– history is folded into design research, and practice is informed by theory. The classes in this part of the program are called Graphic Design I, II, and III. Courses contain individual project work , and flexibility in the course descriptions allow courses to accommodate “live” projects, field trips, and small group work.

In the 400 level year of graphic design, Students have the opportunity to put into action the processes and techniques learned in earlier stages of their experience. Students execute their ideas varied projects. Opportunities arise for participation in community connected projects, which foster accountability & social awareness while exercising methodology.
This is also a platform for seriously launching into design practice. Toward the end of the year students finalize their portfolio materials, prepare a resume & digital presentations, and mount an exhibit so that they are prepared to share examples of their work with potential clients and employers.
The design classes in the 400 level sequence are called Applied Design I, II, and III. Professional Concerns is the capstone course for all art majors, in which each student exhibits their work and presents their most current portfolio.
