Study Abroad

General Information

As soon as you decide to study or intern abroad, make an appointment to see a financial aid counselor. Remember to take a copy of the budget for your program to your appointment.  For additional information about study abroad and financial aid, click here.  Though many types of financial aid and scholarships apply to study abroad and international internships, there are some exceptions. The Financial Aid Office can advise you about what will apply.  WOU also offers a variety of scholarships, some of which you may be able to use for study abroad.

WOU Scholarships for Study Abroad

Friends of Gentle House Foreign Study Grant:  Available to a WOU student in the German Program. Criteria | ApplicationDeadlines: Winter term: October 30; Spring term, February 1; Summer or Fall terms, April 1. One $1,000 scholarship available.

CCSA Scholarships 

Storyteller Scholarshiphttp://ccsa.cc/scholarships/ccsa-storyteller

Scholarship Information: The Storyteller Scholarship is a way for students to contribute to participation in CCSA programs by telling stories regarding CCSA experiences.  The scholarship will be awarded to the applicant with the writing that shows the most quality, while tying the content to the specific program for which that student has applied. Content must be CCAA web site appropriate. Other formats like YouTube or a blog may be proposed.

Amount: Max. $1,000 per award.

Eligibility:

  • Enrolled in a CCSA program for credit
  • Full-time student at CCSA college/university
  • Essay required
  • 300-500 words
  • Topic: “What do I hope to gain from this CCSA experience?”
  • Short statement of how project will be presented
  • Sample of project; showcase technical and creative elements

Deadline: February 29, 2016

CISabroad Scholarships: available to students accepted to CIS programs. 70% of all CISabroad students receive scholarships or grants to study or intern abroad.

Travel Blogger Scholarship

Scholarship information: Maintain online journal.

Amount: $250-$500

Eligibility:

  • At least 2.5 GPA
  • Complete all scholarship application requirements

Photojournalist Scholarship

Scholarship Information: Maintain online photo wordpress blog containing a minimum of 100 photos by the end of the program.

Amount: $100/ $100 Amazon gift card (purchase a digital camera)

Eligibility:

  • No GPA requirement
  • Complete all scholarship application requirements
  • Statement explaining why you want to be a CISabroad Photojournalist

Videojournalist Scholarship

Scholarship information: Maintain an online video wordpress with at least one video by the end of the program.

Amount: $100/ $100 Amazon gift card (purchase a digital camera)

Eligibility:

  • No GPA requirement
  • Complete all scholarship application requirements
  • Statement explaining why you want to be a CISabroad Videojournalist

Pioneer Scholarship

Scholarship Information:This scholarship is made for students who are classified as the first from their US university to study abroad on a CISabroad program. Maintain an online journal.

Amount: $250-$500

Eligibility:

  • Among the first students of University to go abroad
  • At least 2.5 GPA
  • Complete all scholarship application requirements

Correspondent Scholarship

Scholarship Information:

Correspondent Scholarship: Maintain online journal and partake two study abroad related activities when recipient has returned home.

Amount: $500-$1,000

Eligibility:

Green Scholarship

Scholarship Information: Participate in at least two green activities while overseas. Student must then make a presentation of their experience.

Amount: $250-$500

Eligibility:

  • No GPA requirement
  • Complete all scholarship application requirements

IE3 Scholarships

IE3 Global Scholarship: http://ie3global.org/school/western-oregon-university/funding/grants-scholarships/

Scholarship Information: Presented to applicants to IE3 Global study abroad and internship programs. Complete an application for IE3 Global program and a scholarship application.

Amount: $500-$1500

Eligibility:

  • Currently enrolled students who want to obtain a degree
  • Completed IE3 application

Deadline:

Summer: March 1

Fall: May 1

Winter: October 1

Spring: December 1

SEA Scholarships

Trimester/Quarter Awards: Automatic scholarships are awarded to students enrolling in Fall, Winter and Spring SEA semester programs. Not available for Summer Sessions.

Amount: $2,500

SEA High School Alumni Awards: Available to students that have participated in one of the SEA high school seminars.

Amount: Up to $2,500

SEA Alumni Awards: A student who has previously participated in a SEA semester program.

Amount: Up to $5,000

SEI Alumni Referral Awards: Applicants who have learned about SEA Semester from an alumnus or alumna.

Amount: Up to $2,500

SEA Legacy Awards: Applicants parents must have participated in a SEA Semester program.

Amount: Up to $2,500

Henry L. and Grace Doherty Endowed Journalism Scholarship: Available to student majoring in Journalism and participating in a Fall, Winter or Spring SEA Semester program.

Amount: Up to $2,500

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship: Students interested in underrepresented fields of study; Pell Grant recipient and first generation college students.

Boren Awards–National Security Education Program — WOU Deadline 12/15: Students who wish to work in the federal national security arena and the federal government.
DAAD–for study in Germany: Current second and third year students who have interest in contemporary German and European affairs.
Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund: Undergraduate and graduate students advocating peace, justice and social change.
Elie Wiesel’s Prize on Ethics: Undergraduate full-time juniors and seniors interested in the education of ethical dimensions; ethics essay required.
Fund for International Service Learning: Open to all students willing to document service experience while studying abroad.
Fund for Education Abroad: DACA students, student athletes, minorities, veterans interested in studying in non-traditional locations.
Gallagher Koster Health Careers Scholarship Program: Students must be involved in three civic or community organizations; essay required.
Global Studies Foundation Student Grant: Students already in the process of study abroad; must acknowledge GSF’s support and report study abroad experience.
Golden Key: Current active GK undergraduate students, graduate students and advisers must attend conference in Arizona and show development gained from conference.
Healthy Lifestyles Scholarship: First year college students who are twenty-five years or younger; essay required.
National Italian American Foundation: Undergraduates, graduates, post-graduates and legal students who have at least one Italian ancestor.
Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant Competition: Undergraduates who have applied or have been accepted in to study abroad program; must attend institution with active Phi Kappa Phi chapter.

$2000 “No Essay” College Scholarship: All students who are planning or enrolling within 12 months to a study abroad program.

ScholarTrips Scholarship: Students interested in any field of study; video or essay required.
