Chinese New Year 2016
Monday February 8th at 5:30pm in the WUC Pacific Room
WOU Chinese students celebrate the Chinese New Year every year by hosting a dinner. As our students are far from home and families, many will gather at this event with local friends and “family” to welcome in the New Year.
The 2016 celebration is put on by Chinese Students & Scholars Association and OIED. It will feature performances by WOU students, visiting scholars from Guangxi Arts University, and guests from PSU and the U of O. A delicious dinner of traditional and modern Chinese food will be served. It is a great chance to mix and mingle with our Chinese students, make new friends, and have fun. We hope to see you there!
The Chinese New Year, also know as the Spring Festival, is an important holiday based on the Chinese lunar calendar. It is celebrated in Chinese communities around the world. Traditionally it is a time to honor the family ancestors and deities. Today it is often celebrated with a large family reunion dinner. Homes are decorated with red paper-cuts and couplets with themes of good fortune, happiness, wealth and longevity. On New Years eve at midnight fireworks and firecrackers are set off to usher in the new year.
