International Health Insurance Information

International students and scholars at WOU are required to have health and accident insurance coverage for themselves and their dependents living in the United States based on Oregon Administrative Rule #574-035-0005.

Health insurance is mandatory for international students and scholars every term they are at WOU, including summer. The only exceptions are for students with Government Sponsored Medical Insurance provided by their home government.

WOU partners with Gallagher to offer a health plan that meets immigration and Oregon State requirements. If you don’t have government-sponsored insurance, you’ll be automatically enrolled and charged for this international insurance plan each term.

TERM Fall Winter Spring Summer
DATES Sept 25 – Dec 8, 2023 Jan 8 – Mar 22, 2024 Apr 1 – Jun 14, 2024 Jun 24 – Sept 6, 2024
RATE $707 $461 $461 $373

Please note that summer insurance will be added to your account with spring term tuition/fees. If you graduate or depart after the spring term, you’ll receive a refund for the summer term insurance charges once your degree is awarded or departure paperwork is received.

Gallagher offers a detailed website where you can create an account to track claims, print ID cards, submit claim forms, find doctors, and more. Enrolled students should create an account here. Be sure to have your student ID number ready when creating your account.

Waiver Information

If you find the WOU international insurance plan too expensive, you may be eligible for a waiver each term if you provide proof of coverage that meets specific requirements:

  • Medical Benefits of $100,000 per condition maximum
  • Repatriation of Remains of at least $25,000
  • Medical Evacuation to your home country for $50,000
  • A deductible not exceeding $500 per condition
  • Pre-Existing Condition waiting period as determined by industry standards
  • Coverage available in the U.S. with a physical U.S. based office

You have three weeks of each term to submit the waiver documents to the Office of International Education & Development. If your plan meets all the requirements, the petition to waive the WOU policy will be approved, and you’ll receive a refund for that term. If the policy does not meet the requirements or if the form is submitted after the term deadline, the petition will be denied, and you’ll be required to purchase the WOU international insurance plan.

Deadlines to submit the waiver request each term:

  • Summer: June 28, 2024
  • Fall: October 4, 2024
  • Winter: January 12, 2024
  • Spring: April 5, 2024

You can download the International Insurance Waiver Form or pick up a form at the OIED and attach your Insurance Policy before turning it in. For questions, please email global@wou.edu.

Students are encouraged to check if their policy qualifies for a waiver before making a purchase from an outside company to avoid paying for two policies if the waiver is not approved or applied.

Note 1: Pay tuition/fees during the first week of each term to avoid late fees and interest. If a waiver is approved, you’ll receive a refund.

Note 1.2: If you have any special medical needs during your stay at WOU, please notify the coordinator before your arrival. Also, if you are currently taking any prescription medications or wear contact lenses or eyeglasses, you should bring a copy of your prescription with you to the U.S. in case you need to have it refilled while you are here.
