Commencement Attendance and Seating

The Western Oregon University Commencement Ceremony takes place rain or shine on June 15, 2019. The stadium is covered, but guests are advised to prepare for all kinds of weather.

The gates will open at 8:30 a.m. for seating in the McArthur Stadium. Seating is on a first-come basis with no reservations and no tickets required. The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m.

Visitors who prefer to view the ceremony from an indoor location can do so in the New PE building gymnasium or the Columbia room in the Werner University Center. Both locations provide viewing via a live, large-screen monitor. New PE is across the street to the north of the stadium and features bleacher seats with no backs. The Columbia room is east of the stadium off of Church Street, provides chairs for seating, and is a temperature-controlled environment.

The stadium features bleacher seats with no backs. Guests are welcome to bring their own stadium seats if back support is desired. The stadium bleacher seats are partially covered and will provide some protection from rain. The bleachers are east-facing and will have some shade coverage as the afternoon hours approach.

Once the ceremony begins it usually lasts about 2.5 hours. Out of respect for each other and the solemnity of the occasion, guests are asked to stay for the entire ceremony.

The Commencement Reception will begin in The Grove after the ceremony. All graduates and their guests are welcome to attend.
