Steps in applying to Interpreting Studies Certificates program:

Graduate students may apply to the Interpreting Certificates program any time of the year

Detailed application requirements:

  1. Apply for WOU Graduate admission:

  • Complete WOU Application for Graduate Admission online.
  • $60 application fee
  • Evidence of completion of a four-year baccalaureate degree (or international equivalent) from regionally accredited institution as defined by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars, with a cumulative B average (equivalent 3.00 on a U.S. 4.00 grading scale) on the most recent baccalaureate degree. If the applicant’s cumulative GPA is below 3.00, but a calculation using the last 90 quarter credits (60 semester credits) of graded course work is 3.0 or higher, the latter will be used as the basis for admission. Applicants who hold a master’s degree will have the 3.0 GPA requirement waived.
    • GPA requirement: Students with less than 3.0 can also provide passing MAT/GRE scores to be fully admitted. A student who has an undergraduate GPA of 2.50 to 2.99 can be admitted conditionally for the first 9 credit hours. Students can petition for conditional graduate admission via the graduate student general petition located on the graduate office website. *Conditionally admitted students will not be able to receive financial aid until they become fully admitted students and a program plan is on file.
  1.  Apply for Interpreting Studies Certificate admission:

  • Program Application Form: Complete the program application form.
  • Unofficial transcripts: From all previous college coursework. This is a separate copy from the official transcripts required by the Graduate Programs office.
  • Evidence of Interpreting Certification and/or Experience: Evidence of certification and/or experience interpreting and/or translating. Those without certification may be admitted via an alternative assessment (see application):
    • Submit at least 1 letter of recommendation from should be consumers and/or colleagues who can speak to your ability to navigate meaning transfer between parties who do not use the same language.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development:
    • Evidence may include:
      • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Continuing Education unit transcript
      • Documentation, transcripts, or certificates demonstrating privation in continuing education opportunities (e.g., units required to maintain certification)
      • Documentation of other professional development in the area of teaching. mentoring, leadership, and/or adult education is preferred.
  • Resume
  • Recommendation: Include recommendation from 3 people of your choice (at least one who can address potential to teach/lead/mentor and at least one who can address your competence as an interpreter).
  • Pre-screening Assessment: After we review your program application, we will email you further instructions so you may complete this step.
