Gentle House 2018 Schedule of Garden Days


Workdays are the 2nd and 4th Thursdays from 9:30am to 12:30pm

Refreshments afterwards on the North Porch


Feb. 22 – Prune grapes and shrubs (public demonstration, 10-12)

Mar. 8 – Spring clean-up, check wildflowers, spray roses, tag emerging perennials and bulbs

Mar. 22 – Divide perennials (transplant or pot), remove mulch, fertilize roses, rhodies and azaleas

Apr. 7 – Trim shrubs along back border; deadhead spent blooms

Apr. 21 – Saturday – Community Workday-edging, weeding, spreading bark dust (9 am)

Apr. 22 – Sunday – Wedding Open House

Apr. 26 – Deadhead early blooming shrubs, tag bulbs, monitor Grandma Garden, check ferns

May 10 – Monitor ferns, prune boxwood, plant annuals and perennials, pinch back mums/asters

May 24 – Prune early flowering plants, prune/stake tall perennials

Jun. 14 – General maintenance, deadhead roses/flowering plants, monitor insects/mold

Jun. 28 – General maintenance, prune hedges, Annual Volunteers’ Picnic (after workday)

Jul. 12 – General maintenance and monitoring, prune tall perennials

Jul. 26 – Tag iris and bulbs to divide, layout for replanting, general maintenance

Aug. 9 – General maintenance, check grapes

Aug. 23 – Dig and divide bulbs, divide iris if dormant, general maintenance

Sep. 13 – Thin grapes and put on netting; begin fall clean-up

Sep. 30 – Saturday – Community Workday – remove invasives, work on back border (9 am)

Oct. 11 – Fall clean-up, plant shrubs, pot tender perennials, grape harvest

Oct. 25 – Begin winterizing grounds, mulch tender plants

Nov. 7-10 – Holiday Bazaar, greeters needed

*Nov. 15 – Winterize and mulch roses (public demonstration, 10-12)

*Dec. 6 – Decorate house for the holidays (10-12), Volunteer Tea in the Dining Room, noon

Dec. 7 – Friday – Holiday Open House – Music and refreshments following the tree lighting (7-8:30pm)

*these dates are the first Thursday because of holidays or special events
