About the major

The Education major consists of content and education-based coursework, proficiency tests required by Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission, and classroom experience working with youths. You must apply to the Professional Education Core. Before entering the Professional Education Core, you need to complete Liberal Arts Core Curriculum (LACC) courses, BA/BS degree requirements, and teaching authorization major courses.

Advising model

The Division of Teacher Education has a three phase advising model to help ensure that you take the most appropriate courses for the LACC and teaching major. After completing five of the six criteria in Phase One (see Classes, Experience and Test) you may be eligible to move to Phase Two by requesting a file review from the Academic Advising and Learning Center (AALC). For those pursuing the revised (three term) education core, see your advising guide for changes to the advising model.

Phase One starts when you declare the pre-education major at WOU. Ideally this is during your freshman year but it can happen at any point of your academic career. Meet with an adviser in the AALC and work to fulfill the LACC. The AALC adviser helps you choose courses that apply toward the Undergraduate or Post-baccalaureate program and explains Phase One requirements. Note: You must see your adviser each term to have your Advising Hold removed. Transfer students first meet with the AALC adviser (Phase One) but can move to Phase Two as soon as five of the six criteria are met and the file review is complete.

File review at the end of Phase One: You may be eligible to move from Phase One to Phase Two by fulfilling five of the six criteria in the table below (see Classes, Experience and Test). You will request a file review from your AALC adviser and your transcripts, test scores, and experience will be evaluated to determine transition to Phase Two. Once the AALC adviser signs the File Review Form, arrange to meet with the Division of Teacher Education Undergraduate Adviser: Andrea Carano, Education Building Room 114A, 503-838-8675

Phase Two begins when you are assigned an adviser in the Division of Teacher Education (DTE) in the College of Education. Finish any remaining LACC courses and begin to focus on the teaching authorization/major courses. Meet with your DTE adviser each term to discuss progress, plan for future terms, and release the Advising Hold.

Application (during Phase Two): Early in Phase Two pick up an application packet from the College of Education, Education Building Room 202, and ask about application sessions. This formal application outlines materials needed, such as content test score, the second letter of documentation, and a resume. Note: You must apply to the Undergraduate or Post-Baccalaureate teacher edcuation program two terms before you plan to enter. (Full-time students enter fall and spring terms, part-time students enter winter term only.) During the term you turn in the application, you must also meet with your DTE adviser to fill out an official degree plan. You can have up to 4 credits of outstanding coursework in the revised program upon entering Phase Three (excluding Ed 312 Students, Teachers, Schools and Society). We strongly recommend completing all credits beforehand, especially if you are pursuing the ESOL or ESOL/Bilingual endorsement.

Phase Three begins once a candidate is accepted into the Professional Education Core and starts the first term of the Undergraduate or Post-baccalaureate program. Each candidate transitions to a team leader adviser during Term One of the program. You are responsible for completing any remaining LACC courses, the teaching major, and BA/BS or focus area requirements outside of the Professional Education Core. During Term One, apply for graduation via the Registrar's Office; this removes the Advising Hold for the rest of your time at WOU.
