The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at Western Oregon University is designed to provide second career and non-traditional students an opportunity to earn the following:

  1. initial teacher licensure,
  2. authorization to teach high school (middle school is optional), and
  3. a graduate degree.

Our MAT program is available as a full-time on-campus program which takes one year to complete, and a part-time, web-based program which takes a year and a half to complete. The full time program has students in the high schools during the morning and participating in classes on campus in the afternoon until the last term when full-time student teaching occurs. For the part-time program students have a gradual progression each term into the classroom until the full-time student teaching during the last term. Online course work combined with once a month Saturday classes on campus with faculty and fellow students offers a flexible and rich learning environment.

University courses are closely linked to classroom experience so teacher candidates can explore theories and practices learned in their studies. New cohorts begin in January and June with teacher candidates working together as a cohort to complete courses. Teaching proficiencies that define what teachers should know and be able to do upon completion of the program are threaded through each course. Assessment of the proficiencies occurs through classroom activities, course assignments, teaching evaluations, and production of two work samples.

CHANGES in PRAXIS II test requirements: Only one test is required for science endorsements--biology, chemistry, physics and integrated science. Available test dates for physical education and social studies have changed. For PE, you must schedule two tests for one day and the third for the next test session (two months later). For social studies, test 0085 is only given four times a year and test 0081 is given at every test date. IMPORTANT - refer to this PRAXIS II link for up-to-date information. Thank you, College of Education, 10/21/08

Special notes:
1. When printing pages from our Web site, be sure to adjust your left and right margins: File, Page Setup, .3 inch.

2. The MAT is also available not in a teacher licensure format.
