Bilingual Fellow categories:
To be considered a Bilingual Fellow I:
- Be an undergraduate pre-Education major
- Determine language proficiency via one of the following:
- Be a heritage/native speaker,
- Pass the language placement test (for Spanish and German, >203 level), or
- Be enrolled in language classes (100 series).
- Attend the CBEST Study Skills Event to help you prepare and then take the CBEST You will be reimbursed for the test costs!*
- Meet with Karie Mize, Bilingual Program Coordinator
- Sign up to receive periodic e-mails from bilingualfellows@wou.edu to learn about volunteer and work experiences, opportunities for language and cultural development, and relevant scholarships
- Be recognized through Bilingual Program newsletters and bulletin boards
For Education program: Get 30 hours of experience and a letter of documentation.
To be considered a Bilingual Fellow II:
- Be an undergraduate pre-Education major or apply to the MAT program
- Determine language proficiency via one of the following:
- Be a heritage/native speaker,
- Pass the language placement test (for Spanish and German, > 203 level), or
- Be enrolled in language classes (200 series).
- Take the ORELA (or Praxis II exam for content area – high school authorization)
- We will pay for you to be a member of OEA so you can you attend the test preparation session
- You will be reimbursed for the test costs!*
- Meet with Bilingual Program Coordinator or Assistant at least once a term
- Receive e-mails from bilingualfellows@wou.edu
- Meet with ESOL/Bilingual advisor and sign contract
- May be enrolled in ED 482D and ED 483D (or ED 682 and ED 683)
- Be recognized through Bilingual Program newsletters and bulletin boards
For Education program: Get 30 more hours of experience and a confidential letter.
To be considered a Bilingual Fellow III:
- Be enrolled in an Education program: undergraduate, DegreePlus or MAT
- Demonstrate required language proficiency (via one of the following):
- Enrolled in or completed language classes (6 cr. of 300 series or higher)
- Take foreign language Praxis, or another Bilingual/ESOL approved demonstration of proficienc
- Attend the ESOL Praxis Study Session to help you prepare and then take the ESOL Praxis (#0360). You will be reimbursed for the test costs!*
- Plan to complete the remaining ESOL/Bilingual classes and practicum
- Be recognized at graduation with a colorful stole
*Up to $400 dollars will be reimbursed for test costs. Two foreign language Praxis tests (Content Knowledge and Productive Language Skills) and the Praxis II content tests (needed for middle/high authorization) may also be reimbursed if the fellow has not exhausted the $400 stipend.
