Bilingual Teacher Initiative
Why become a bilingual teacher at WOU?
![]() |
- Students need teachers who are bilingual and trained in the techniques of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)! Achievement data suggest that English language learners need specialized teaching strategies to perform on par with their peers.
- You can give back to your community by being a teacher. We follow the great tradition of teachers as advocates and activists!
- Teaching is a portable career. Bilingual teachers are more employable in Oregon and nation-wide.
- We provide a unique pre-service opportunity to gain experience with local bilingual K-12 students. Link to Tutor Academy
Teaching endorsement in ESOL and ESOL/Bilingual
- Anyone who speaks another language can pursue the Bilingual/ESOL Endorsement in Oregon.
- Link to learn more about the ESOL and ESOL/Bilingual Endorsements: http://www.wou.edu/esol-bilingual
- If you speak Spanish and are pursuing the Bilingual/ESOL Endorsement, you can also be a part of the Bilingual Teacher Program, which recruits, recognizes, and helps retain Spanish-English bilinguals in teacher preparation programs at WOU. Because there is immediate need for Spanish speaking educators in districts across Oregon, several support services are offered to pre-service teachers, known as Bilingual Fellows, who are pursuing their Bilingual/ESOL Endorsement in Spanish.
