ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Julie Johnson is an Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, where she has been teaching since 1988. In her private practice she interprets conferences, executive seminars and court proceedings and translates documents primarily related to business law, corporate communications, and advanced technologies. In addition to an M.A. in French Translation and Interpretation, she holds a B.A. in International Relations and French, and a Baccalaureat secondary degree from France.

Holly Mikkelson is Director of Programs at Language Services Associates and Adjunct Professor of Translation and Interpretation at the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation, Monterey Institute of International Studies. She is an ATA-certified translator (Spanish > English, English > Spanish) and a state and federally certified court interpreter and author who has taught translation and interpreting for over 25 years. She is the author of the Acebo interpreter training manuals as well as numerous articles on translation and interpretation, and is a co-author of Fundamentals of Court Interpretation: Theory, Policy and Practice. Professor Mikkelson has consulted with many state and private entities on interpreter testing and training, and has presented lectures and workshops to interpreters and related professionals throughout the world.

Carol J. Patrie is national and international consultant on issues related to interpretation and teaching interpretation. She is Director of Curriculum and Instruction for The Effective Interpreting Professional Education Series, Language Matters, Inc. She is a past president of the Conference of Interpreter Trainers and is a recipient of the Mary Stotler Award. In 1998, she was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Faculty award at Gallaudet University where she was professor and director of the MA in Interpretation. She was a visiting faculty member at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. She is the author of The Effective Interpreting Series and Interpreting in Medical, Legal, and Insurance Settings, all published by DawnSignPress.

Debra Russell is an AVLIC certified interpreter with over twenty years of experience. She holds the David Peikoff Chair of Deafness Studies at the University of Alberta and also serves as the Director of the Western Canadian Centre for Studies in Deafness. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Calgary. She maintains an active interpreting practice and participates in several interpreting organizations at the provincial, national and international levels. She is the author of Interpreting in Legal Contexts, published by Linstok Press in their Dissertation Series.

Sharon Neumann Solow works as an interpreter, interpreter coordinator, performer, lecturer and consultant. Her career has taken her around the United States, and to Canada, Mexico, Europe, Scandinavia, New Zealand and Australia. She has been involved in the education of spoken language interpreters and interpreter educators through the Monterey Institute of International Studies. The 1987 recipient of the national Virginia Hughes Award for outstanding contributions to the field of sign language interpreting, she is the author of two books, Sign Language Interpreting: A Basic Resource Book (newly revised) and Say It With Sign, along with a number of professional articles and handbooks.
