Accreditation

Program strengths

"The full time and adjunct faculty are committed to the students to ensure they graduate competent professionals ready to take on the challenges of this profession.

The faculty is constantly engaged in professional development opportunities. They present on a national, regional and local level. WOU is fortunate to have a manageable faculty/student ratio to provide students with the quality of service they need to be successful in their major."

- CCIE 4/7/2010

This degree program earned full national accreditation through the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education on March 31, 2010. The CCIE accreditation process is rigorous yet voluntary. With it, WOU joins only a handful of qualifying institutions located around the U.S.

Achieving CCIE accreditation demonstrates WOU 's strong and continuing commitment to students. CCIE sets forth institutional standards that demonstrate how the program is supported by a nationally accredited university (see current WOU course catalog, accreditation), is accessible to qualified students, offers a standards-based curriculum, hires qualified faculty and staff, provides adequate financial resources and facilities, and uses outcomes, assessments and evaluations for program improvement.

Particular strengths of the WOU program cited by CCIE are professional development, faculty/student ratios, and expertise of the faculty. This accreditation, valid until March 2020, sets WOU apart, allowing graduates enhanced opportunities within a program that is standards-based and nationally accredited.

Link to the decision announcement from the CCIE president on April 7, 2010, to Elisa Maroney, chair and associate professor of Special Education, and Amanda R. Smith, assistant professor of Special Education. They co-coordinate the bachelor's degree program in ASL/English Interpreting. Smith led the accreditation efforts.
