Karie Mize - Bio
| I began my career as a bilingual (Spanish/English) teacher in Los Angeles
in 1994. I had 33 first graders and very few books or resources! After two
years I moved to Lake Tahoe and taught in Kings Beach in a predominantly Mexican-American
community near the Nevada border. I taught fourth grade, but ended up returning
to first grade because I loved teaching kids how to read and write. After six
years I moved to Sacramento and taught another bilingual first grade,
but the new experience was that many of my students were children of hard working
farm workers. I really appreciated the produce in our stores and restaurants
after hearing their stories!
After nine years I left the elementary classroom to teach at six different universities in the Sacramento and San Francisco Bay areas. They call part-time university people “freeway fliers” or “Roads Scholars,” and I found out why, driving from place to place with my office in the back of my car! In December 2004 I graduated from University of San Francisco with a doctorate in International and Multicultural Education and emphasis in Second Language Acquisition. I was hired in the ESOL/Bilingual program at WOU in 2005 and have been serving as Coordinator of the Bilingual Teacher Program since 2007. ¡Sí Se Puede! |
