The Center for Academic Innovation is proud to host the Community Lecture Series. The lectures provide an excellent opportunity for community members to engage with WOU faculty and explore informational topics related to current areas of research and expertise. These monthly presentations are free and open to the public.

Dr. Sylvia Valdés-Fernández’s Bio:
Dr. Sylvia Valdés-Fernández is a Math Instructor and Developmental Math Coordinator for Western Oregon University (WOU). She earned a Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in Math Education and Equity from the University of Washington and is working towards a PhD in Math Education at Oregon State University. Sylvia has worked an educational consultant and a high school math teacher, and assisted in founding the José Valdés Summer Math Institutes in San Jose and Stockton, CA which focus on underserved students achieving access to higher education through the learning of mathematics; the Valdés Math Institute was honored by the Obama Administration with the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence.
Sylvia is Cuban-American and is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. She currently resides in Monmouth, Oregon with her husband, who is a software engineer, her son, who will be graduating from WOU with a BS in Applied Math in June 2017, and her daughter who is a sophomore and a double-major in Music Performance and Pre-medicine at Mary Baldwin University in Virginia.
